For the 45th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and the 2023 Regional Scientific Meetings, the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) adopted the theme “Agham at Teknolohiya para sa Demokrasya (Science and Technology for Democracy).”
This theme underscores the pivotal role of science and technology in promoting developmental empowerment within a democratic framework. It seeks to distinguish between exploitative and developmental empowerment, addressing the challenges posed to democracy while harnessing science and technology for greater inclusion and welfare. These meetings serve as a platform for discussions on science and technology’s contributions to strengthening democratic institutions, including examples such as renewable energy technologies, mobile wireless telephony for farmers, blockchain’s potential, and the impact of automatic vote counting machines and social media on democracy.
