For the 20th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) held on July 8–9, 1998, the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) adopted the theme “The Philippine Social Sciences in the Life of the Nation.” Coinciding with the centennial of Philippine independence, the meeting highlighted the vital role of the social sciences in understanding human behavior, social interaction, and the broader dynamics that shape national development. Discussions emphasized how insights from the social sciences can complement scientific and technological efforts by addressing societal impacts, guiding policy decisions, and strengthening nation-building initiatives. The ASM also underscored the importance of collaboration among academic institutions and scientific organizations in advancing knowledge and promoting the contributions of social scientists to Philippine progress.
