VOLUME 22 (2000)

For the 22nd Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) held in July 2000, the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) adopted the theme “Challenges in the New Millennium for Science and Technology.” The meeting addressed five pressing concerns—environment and health, climate change, transportation and traffic management, information and communications technology (ICT), and biotechnology in agriculture. Recognizing the evolving role of science in a knowledge-driven economy, the ASM brought together experts to share insights and propose policy recommendations to guide the country through 21st-century challenges. The event also featured the annual recognition of outstanding contributions to science, reinforcing NAST’s commitment to ensuring that science serves both national development and the broader good of humanity. For the 21st Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) held on July 7–8, 1999, the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) adopted the theme “Food, Population and Environment.” The meeting highlighted the interrelated challenges of ensuring food security, managing population growth, and protecting the environment—issues considered critical to national development. Through discussions and the sharing of expertise among scientists and stakeholders, the ASM aimed to generate greater national awareness and encourage informed and rational solutions that would help secure adequate food for Filipinos while promoting environmental sustainability. VOLUME 20 (1998)

For the 20th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) held on July 8–9, 1998, the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) adopted the theme “The Philippine Social Sciences in the Life of the Nation.” Coinciding with the centennial of Philippine independence, the meeting highlighted the vital role of the social sciences in understanding human behavior, social interaction, and the broader dynamics that shape national development. Discussions emphasized how insights from the social sciences can complement scientific and technological efforts by addressing societal impacts, guiding policy decisions, and strengthening nation-building initiatives. The ASM also underscored the importance of collaboration among academic institutions and scientific organizations in advancing knowledge and promoting the contributions of social scientists to Philippine progress.
