Abstract
Among the alternatives being considered to address plastic pollution are
bioplastics. In this review, bioplastics are defined as plastics that are obtained from biological sources and that are biodegradable and environmentally safe. This review will focus on the chemical additives that should likewise be made from biological sources and should likewise be biodegradable and environmentally safe. The properties of biopolymers, specifically polylactic acid, terrestrial biopolymers, and marine biopolymers, will be briefly described to highlight the properties where functionalization is needed. Biodegradable chemical additives are described, in particular, plasticizers, hardeners, stabilizers, colorants, flame retardants, fillers, and processing aids. However, bioplastics must overcome several challenges: supply chain, functionality, quality, and cost. To be successful, bioplastics should be developed for niche applications that have high demand.
