Abstract
Bioinformatics tools play key roles in managing biological information at every stage of the research process, from formulating hypotheses and gathering, storing, retrieving, and analyzing data, to publication, peer review, and validation of scientific information. While genomics has received the greatest amount of attention, scientists have also focused on gene expression through “transcriptomics,” the study of genes transcribed into RNA under specific conditions. Other researchers are deeply engaged in “proteomics,” which involves studying protein structure and function and predicting gene function at the protein level. Additionally, some scientists are mapping interactions between gene products, an area referred to as the study of the “interactome.” Together, bioinformatics and more efficient wet laboratory tools have fueled this explosion of research. Both are essential to gaining a deeper understanding of how organisms function within their environments. Finally, bioinformatics presents a significant opportunity for advancing science in the Philippines.
